In another positive step towards the 2010 season, the Bendigo Bombers’ 2008 best and fairest winner, Hayden Skipworth, will return to the club as playing Assistant Coach.
General Manager, Peter Lodewijks, said that Skipworth’s signing was a significant part of the club’s efforts to bolster its playing list and build a competitive team for the coming season.
“Hayden had an exceptional year in 2008 when he won our best and fairest award and he played 11 games with Essendon this year” he said.
Coach Shannon Grant added, “We’re extremely pleased that he’s agreed to a role as playing assistant coach, because he’s in a position to make a huge contribution to the development of the club’s young players in an on-field and mentoring and coaching role.”
“On and off the field he’s continually demonstrated a terrific work ethic and his AFL and VFL experience and knowledge will be an integral part of our 2010 plans.
“The fact that he came back so successfully after a serious knee injury in 2007 to win a best and fairest at VFL level is a clear indication of his commitment to football and to his determination to succeed.”
“To get a player of Hayden’s ability and character who consistently demonstrates those qualities and can contribute very effectively to the development of younger players is a major plus for us.”
“We’re aiming to build a team that will be competitive at VFL level and which has a good mix of experienced and young players.”
“Apart from his football skills and experience, Hayden will bring a lot of enthusiasm to the assistant coach’s role and to playing for the club and that’s also going to be extremely important in terms of team development.”
